Seed Germination Process

Seed germination is an irreversible process. Germination includes the process of changing the seed to become a new plant.

The first step in the process of seed germination is imbibition or absorption of water. The seed takes cellular elements which results in swelling of the seed. The swelling causes the seed coat to rupture and enables the radicle to come out in the form of a primary root. Then the embryo gets enlarged so the seed coat and burst opens. After that the tip of root emerges and helps anchor the seed grow in surface of soil. Finally, plantula grow in surface of soil and form a new plant. The new plant consists of radicle, cotyledon, leaves, and kaulikulus.

Some seeds require special treatment of temperature, light or moisture to start germination. So, the steps of seed germination can be different in dicots and monocots.
